Not only will you learn the fundamentals of this exquisite Prussian blue printing process invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842, you will also gain a deeper understanding of the basic principles involved in alternative printing. This workshop deals with printing onto alternative paper surfaces as well as advanced printing controls such as contrast, development and highlight management. Toning options are an important feature of this workshop and we convert the Cyanotype’s unique Prussian blue to a range of different colours. Although it is not a difficult workshop, attendees should have a basic understanding and some experience working with the Cyanotype process. Early booking is essential as only a limited number of 6 participants can be accommodated per workshop. Participants are required to bring 5 ready-printed Cyanotype images to this workshop for toning purposes. The dates for our Play Days have been selected to provide participants the opportunity to prepare these prints. In addition, Janus and/or Dennis will be available for technical support and guidance. Early booking is essential; if the minimum number of 8 participants is not reached Play Days may be cancelled. Until June focus will be placed on the Cyanotype process, after which other processes will be introduced. The name of this popular process, Van Dyke Brown, originates from the Flemish Painter Sir Anthony van Dyck, famous for using this characteristic brown hue in his paintings. Our first course is foundational and will cover camera exposure, film development, and darkroom printing.
